For those with deep pockets and a taste for adventure, space tourism is about to enter a new era of luxury. Vast, a California-based space startup founded by crypto billionaire Jed McCaleb, is preparing to launch the world’s first commercial space station, Haven-1, into low-Earth orbit. According to Wired, the project promises a space experience akin to five-star accommodations, with travellers floating in comfort above the Earth.

Haven-1 will enter orbit as early as 2025, with the help of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, and is expected to welcome its first paying customers by 2026. This groundbreaking venture will feature four bookable spots for private travelers, with each trip lasting an average of 10 days. The design and amenities of the space station set a new standard for luxury in space tourism.

The station’s design, spearheaded by Peter Russell-Clarke, a key figure behind some of Apple’s most iconic products, focuses on comfort and aesthetics. Travellers will find private crew quarters equipped with fire-resistant maple wood slats, adjustable temperature and lighting settings, and a patent-pending sleep system featuring an inflatable queen-sized duvet to ensure restful sleep in a microgravity environment. Communal spaces include a table for shared meals, a resistance band exercise system, and a large central window offering breathtaking views of Earth. Additionally, the space station will feature a research and development lab for microgravity experiments, making the experience both leisurely and scientific.

Although travellers will receive pre-flight safety training, they won’t need to worry about piloting or performing technical tasks. The journey is designed to be as comfortable and stress-free as possible, giving tourists the chance to relax and enjoy the view.

While Vast has yet to release the price of a Haven-1 trip, space tourism isn’t expected to come cheap. As a reference, a 2022 trip to the International Space Station aboard a SpaceX rocket cost $55 million per seat. Haven-1's luxury experience may come at a similar, if not higher, price point.

However, for the adventurous elite, the opportunity to spend 10 days in space, enjoying unparalleled views and state-of-the-art accommodations, could be well worth the cost. Reservations are already being accepted on Vast’s website for those ready to embark on this extraordinary journey. As Vast’s Chief Design and Marketing Officer emphasised, it is not like a carnival ride. For the few who can afford it, Haven-1 promises to redefine the boundaries of space travel.
