Hyatt Hotels Corporation is launching its luxury Alila brand in Shanghai this September, marking its debut with an urban resort in the heart of the city. Alila Shanghai, located on Weihai Road in the Jing'an District, aims to blend Alila’s commitment to local culture and sustainable luxury with Shanghai’s vibrant urban atmosphere.
The Alila brand, which means "surprise" in Sanskrit, is celebrated for integrating local culture with sustainability. Alila Shanghai features 186 rooms, including 94 suites, designed by Horizontal Design Studio to reflect Shanghai’s cultural heritage and modern, nature-inspired aesthetics.
The hotel's sustainability initiatives include using the NORDAQ water bottling system, the first of its kind in China, which replaces plastic bottles with reusable glass containers. Additionally, Nespresso coffee grounds are repurposed as compost for organic produce used in the hotel's restaurants.
Alila Shanghai offers a variety of dining options, including a Shanghainese restaurant, a Japanese grill, a tea lounge, and a rooftop bar with views of Zhangyuan. The hotel's design incorporates Shikumen architectural elements and vintage Shanghai photographs to emphasise traditional culture.
Jtawen Yap, general manager of Alila Shanghai, emphasised the hotel’s focus on cultural immersion. “Alila Shanghai offers a unique blend of leisure and cultural experience,” Yap said. “We invite local cultural heritage experts to engage with our guests, providing a deeper understanding of Shanghai's traditions beyond its bustling cityscape.”
