French luxury fashion house Balmain has announced the appointment of Matteo Sgarbossa as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective from May 6. Sgarbossa will succeed Jean-Jacques Guevel, who departed from the Mayhoola-owned brand in March 2024.

During Guevel’s leadership, Balmain navigated through the challenges posed by the pandemic and made strategic moves to enhance its product offerings. This included the introduction of a monogrammed canvas handbag range and public shows, as well as a fragrance licensing deal with Estée Lauder, set to launch later this year.

With his extensive experience in the fashion industry, including his most recent role as the international director at Givenchy, Sgarbossa is well-positioned to lead Balmain into its next phase of growth. He has also held prominent positions at renowned fashion brands such as Gucci and Mango, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role.

Sgarbossa will collaborate closely with Balmain’s longtime creative director, Olivier Rousteing, to drive innovation and strategic initiatives that further elevate the brand’s global presence and appeal.

While Balmain welcomes Sgarbossa as its new CEO, the brand is yet to announce a successor for its former marketing chief, Txampi Diz, who departed in March. This leadership transition marks an exciting chapter for Balmain as it continues to evolve and redefine luxury fashion in the global market.
