Mercedes, the esteemed German automaker, has disclosed its intention to introduce a scaled-down iteration of its venerable G Class sports utility vehicle, as conveyed by the company’s CEO, Ola Kallenius, in an exclusive interview with CNBC on Sunday.

The G Class, an iconic and robust off-road vehicle with an initial price tag just below $140,000, has long been a preferred choice among discerning consumers in the United States, enjoying a storied legacy of over four decades. Mercedes, renowned for its innovative prowess, has recently infused the model with state-of-the-art technology while tantalising enthusiasts with the prospect of an electric concept version.

In this latest revelation, CEO Ola Kallenius confirmed the impending arrival of a “smaller G,” essentially a compact sibling to the venerable G Class.

Kallenius, however, abstained from specifying a definite launch date for this diminutive counterpart, opting instead for an enticing promise: “If you’re awaiting something exceptional, the wait will assuredly prove worthwhile,” he affirmed.

The introduction of a downsized G Class variant holds the potential to broaden the model’s appeal, reaching a new cohort of buyers and, conceivably, at a different price point within the luxury SUV domain. This strategic manoeuvre places Mercedes in direct competition with renowned rivals such as Range Rover and Bentley Bentayga.

The G Class has established itself as a symbol of exclusivity, with Mercedes vigilantly overseeing the supply of this opulent off-road gem.

Kallenius, in his candid remarks, hinted at the persistence of this exclusivity, stating that the G Class is an icon, a coveted treasure and that acquiring one often feels akin to celebrating a personal milestone, and that the firm will exercise utmost prudence in managing the volume of G Class production.

As the automotive world eagerly anticipates further developments, it is evident that Mercedes’ venture into a smaller G Class iteration represents a strategic move aimed at fortifying its presence in the fiercely competitive luxury SUV market, appealing to a more expansive spectrum of affluent consumers.
