Harvey Nichols, a renowned British department store, has appointed Julia Goddard as its new CEO to boost its competitive edge in the multi-brand luxury retail sector. Goddard, who will assume her new role in June, joins the company from Alexander McQueen, where she served for 14 years and most recently held the position of president of the EMEA region.

During her tenure at Alexander McQueen, Goddard spearheaded the brand’s wholesale and retail expansion across key regions, overseeing the launch of new flagships in major cities such as London, Paris, Milan, Rome, Dubai, Kuwait, and Qatar. Prior to this role, she served as the worldwide wholesale, franchise, and e-concession director.

Harvey Nichols has been on the lookout for a new CEO since Manju Malhotra departed the company last August after a 25-year stint. While initial reports suggested a potential dispute between Malhotra and Harvey Nichols owner and chairman Dickson Poon over strategic direction, the company clarified that the decision was mutual.

In the interim period, Pearson Poon, son of Dickson Poon, has been at the helm of the retailer.

Goddard’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for Harvey Nichols, which faces stiff competition from rivals like Harrods, which recently invested £200 million in revamping its in-store experience. Additionally, luxury brands are increasingly focusing on strengthening their direct-to-consumer channels, adding to the competitive landscape.

Commenting on Goddard’s appointment, the Poons stated, “Julia is a dynamic business leader with a strong track record of delivering quality growth and successfully developing and executing a very important customer (VIC) clienteling strategy. Her expertise and strategic capabilities will be invaluable in delivering long-term sustainable growth for Harvey Nichols.”

As the new CEO, Goddard will join the management board of Harvey Nichols and report directly to the Poons. Established in 1831, Harvey Nichols boasts a global presence with stores in major cities across the UK, as well as international locations in Hong Kong, Dubai, Riyadh, Kuwait, and Doha, along with a dedicated beauty store in Liverpool.
